According to the beta version of the Samsung Health app, it looks like Samsung will discontinue the Classic model for the Galaxy Watch 5. Listings for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are available in the app.

The blunder was discovered by 9to5Google, but based on the preview image, the Pro appears to be designed similarly to the Galaxy Watch 5. In short, it’s leaner and sportier without the mechanical watch sense.

Furthermore, it appears like Samsung may be abandoning the concept of a physical rotating bezel entirely. That is, in my opinion, a bad concept. Worse, the beta software appears to worsen the Galaxy Watch 4’s battery consumption.

Samsung will retain the capacitive bezel found on the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Tizen-powered Galaxy Watch Active 2

The capacitive bezel was less pleasurable to use than the physical bezel in my tests. It is also pickier. But it would at least maintain Samsung’s long-standing hallmark smartwatch feature alive, especially because it’s a key element that distinguishes its watches from the crowd.

The rebranding of the Galaxy Watch Pro indicates that the Wear OS 3 era is set to bring another substantial update to the Galaxy Watch lineup. According to rumours, the Pro will contain a large 572mAh battery, which could help compensate for the Galaxy Watch 4’s low battery life.

The “Pro” trend is also not new. Wearable manufacturers prefer to offer a more expensive Pro model comprised of quality materials with longer battery life — even if that’s the only difference. Huawei did this lately with the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro. Polar accomplished this with its Grit X series, while Garmin accomplished this with its Fenix 6 series. Amazfit and Mobvoi have done it as well with their smartwatches.

Furthermore, with regular rebranding, Samsung is not afraid to confuse everyone. The Galaxy Watch was replaced by the Galaxy Watch 3, which was eventually replaced by the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The Galaxy Watch Active was quickly followed by the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Last year, the design was redesigned as the Galaxy Watch 4. Because there is no unified logic behind it, this may help to clarify things in the long term.
