Samsung Electronics has suffered a major security breach, the hackers behind this breach have claimed that they have leaked data that is nearly 190GB large, including source code and biometric unlocking algorithms.
As per a report by Bleeping Computer, the South Korean company was hit with this breach earlier this month. The group behind this hacking incident was Lapsus$. The organization claimed that it has seized a large amount of data from Samsung Electronics.
If this news is indeed true, then Samsung needs to bump up its security efforts, the group teased the data leak on Friday by posting an image of C/C++ directives in Samsung’s software.
The group also added in the description that the leak contains ‘confidential Samsung source code’ as well. This code includes the source for every Trusted Applet in Samsung’s TrustZone environment, which is responsible for every sensitive task such as hardware cryptography and access control.
In addition to this, the leak also includes other sensitive data with respect to biometric unlock operation algorithms, the bootloader source for recent devices, activation server source code, and the full source code that is used to authenticate Samsung accounts.
For now, it is to be expected that some confidential source code related to Qualcomm was also leaked. The hacker group has shared the leaked data via torrents, however, it is currently unknown as to exactly how much data the group has managed to acquire.
It is also not clear if the group sought to hold this sensitive information ransom from the company. Samsung officials have claimed that they are assessing the overall situation and will take action accordingly.
