Samsung to pair its Exynos 2500 SoC with custom in-house mobile GPU

The licencing agreement between Samsung and AMD to eventually introduce mobile GPUs to smartphones was recently renewed. A few years from now, we should be welcomed with improved iterations following the unimpressive launch of the Exynos 2200, which actually includes the Xclipse 920 based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture. One tipper claims that the Exynos 2500 will have a custom GPU with numerous optimisations.

The Exynos 2500 may be the “dream chip” that Samsung is covertly developing, according to Revegnus on Twitter. Although the tweet did not provide specific details, it is believed to be paired with a custom GPU that will be built using AMD’s technology.

Samsung has been said to be developing a custom graphics processing unit, and it is likely that the Korean juggernaut will make use of the renewed licencing agreement.

However, it will be years before this new Samsung GPU is available, which is why the Exynos 2500 was mentioned since the Exynos 2400 will still be available before its release. According to reports, the new SoC is intended for Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones, suggesting that the company may eventually stop relying on Qualcomm. Unfortunately, it will need to create a chipset that is competitive with other players in order to do that.

Additionally, the business is currently in last place in the foundry race, most likely as a result of its subpar chip manufacturing process. However, if there are a few delays in the launch schedule, rumours claim that chips mass produced on the second-generation 3nm GAA process will show up in the second half of 2024. The Exynos 2500 could be produced by Samsung using its cutting-edge chip manufacturing technology, but it is too early to say which node will be employed.

Regarding the improvements that were mentioned in the tweet, it’s possible that they had to do with increasing power efficiency since that is a metric that will be valued when used in a future Galaxy smartphone. Unfortunately, the Exynos 2200 did not perform well in that area.
