Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR) just made tech education accessible to students in remote areas with the launch of its first “Samsung Skill Development Centre” at Government Polytechnic Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). This isn’t just another CSR initiative – it’s a strategic move to bridge India’s digital divide and create the next generation of tech innovators.

Five State-of-the-Art Labs Under One Roof

The newly inaugurated facility houses five cutting-edge laboratories designed to provide hands-on learning in the most in-demand tech disciplines. Students now have access to modern tools and equipment that were previously available only in tier-1 cities.

Building on Success: 1,000+ Students Already Trained

This initiative expands Samsung’s earlier collaboration through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC), which partnered with the Government of Karnataka to train over 1,000 students and teachers across 37 polytechnic colleges. The SIC program included infrastructure support, hands-on kits, and curriculum-based training modules.

“This initiative marks a pivotal step in enabling a hands-on experience for students in rural Karnataka,” said Balajee Sowrirajan, EVP & MD, SSIR. “We aim to create limitless opportunities and secure India’s place in the global digital economy.”

Strategic Location: Why Kolar Gold Fields Matters

Choosing KGF for the first Samsung Skill Development Centre is strategic. The region, historically known for gold mining, is now being repositioned as a hub for tech education. This move aligns with Samsung’s commitment to empower youth in remote parts of the country to become catalysts of change and innovation.

Government Support: A Collaborative Approach

The inauguration ceremony saw participation from key Karnataka government officials including Dr. Roopkala M Shashidhar, Chairperson of Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation, and Smt. Manjushree N, Commissioner of Collegiate and Technical Education. Over 500 students, faculty, and dignitaries attended the ceremony.

Industry Impact: Addressing the Skills Gap

With India facing a significant shortage of skilled tech professionals, initiatives like this directly address industry needs. The multidisciplinary approach ensures students gain practical experience across emerging technologies, making them industry-ready upon graduation.

Looking Ahead: A Model for Nationwide Expansion

This pilot project could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across India. Samsung’s focus on AI, IoT, and emerging technologies aligns perfectly with the government’s skill development mission and Digital India objectives.

The initiative supports the Government of India’s skill development mission while positioning Samsung as a key player in India’s tech education transformation.
