Samsung begins working on 6G tech

While the whole world is just beginning to adapt to 5G technology, Samsung is already going one step ahead by beginning its research on 6G technology.

Samsung has continued to showcase its innovation around 5G technology. The company expects completion of the 6G standard and expects its earliest commercialization by as early as 2028. Samsung will hold its ‘Samsung Networks: Redefined’ virtual event on Tuesday to unleash the full potential of 5G.

The company in a release stated.”You will discover how technologies, especially chips and software, can ultimately maximize the performance of networks. You will also get to know more about Samsung’s industry-leading solutions including our virtualized solutions, radios, and private networks.”

Samsung recently came out with a white paper titled, “The Next-Hyper Connected Experience for All”. It summarizes how 6G will be characterized by the provision of advanced services such as truly immersive extended reality (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital replicas.

To accelerate its research for 5G tech, the advanced R & D within Samsung Electronics, SET Business, founded its Advanced Communications Research Center in 2019.

Sungyun Choi, head of Advanced Communications Research Center believes that despite the 5G commercialization being in its early stages, it can never be too early to begin prepping for the future. Development of 6G technology may require a minimum of 10 years to develop from the research phase to the commercialization phase.

India alone estimates nearly 330 million 5G smartphone subscriptions in the next 5 years, it will amount to 26% of mobile subscriptions in the country.

Globally, 5G subscriptions are estimated to exceed 580 million by the end of 2021. The average traffic per smartphone user in India alone has increased from 13GB per month in 2019 to 14.6GB per month in 2020.

While 5G requirements mainly focus on performance aspects, Samsung defines three categories of requirements that need to be achieved to realize 6G services, performance, architectural, and trustworthiness requirements.

Examples of 6G performance requirements achieve a peak data of 1000 Gbps and air latency of fewer than 100 microseconds. That will be 50 times the peak data rate and one-tenth the latency of 5G.
