Samsung AR Head-Mounted Display Patent on WIPO Hints at Design and Features
Last month, 91mobiles covered news about a Samsung AR headset charging case patent. Most recently some design schematics and descriptions of the HMD (head-mounted display) have appeared online. The patent, which has been submitted to WIPO, indicates that the device could either be AR glasses or an HMD with images showing a clear-looking HMD.
With this device, users will be able to see real objects and their environment using the glasses or headset. The abstract includes reference points in virtual space and over the real world for navigation and operation of this patent as well. Also suggests enabling custom visibility settings, providing users with the depth between virtual objects and space.
Users will use virtual components like buttons, menus, and videos that they interact with via touch or selection (tapping, etc.). It will be powered by a version of an operating system, like VisionOS from Apple or Horizon OS from Meta. It has not been confirmed which display technology (LCD/OLED, flexible or flat) is used.
The headset will include lenses, a processor, memory, sensors (including cameras), and other components needed for tasks such as rendering visuals. It may connect to other devices via wired or wireless connections and could support 5G, 6G, Bluetooth, NFC, LAN, and more. Input options may include a remote, gesture control, or speech, with visual cues for users to identify when something is within or outside their field of view.
In interviews, Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, mentioned that these devices are expected to complement smartphones, while Samsung’s TM Roh highlighted the potential for new mixed-reality applications.
