Salary cap is the main reason behind the unavailability of world-class players in ISL

Indian Super League [ISL] is growing rapidly day by day, season by season. Many exciting foreigners are playing in the league in the last few seasons. Now ISL is catching the eyes of big names as well.

Yesterday some reports suggested that Inter Milan midfielder Radja Nainggolan was offered to an ISL club. But he was asking for a salary of around 5 million Euros (approx. Rs 42.5 crore). Inter Milan representatives were told, “No Indian club is in a financial position to pay such an amount.”

FSDL has set some financial rules for all the ISL clubs. All the clubs have to respect the rules. The violation of rules can lead to serious punishment.

According to the rules of ISL, clubs cannot spend more than Rs. 16.5 crores on player salaries. The salary cap does not include the transfer fees of the players. Loan wages are included in this cap though.

There are mixed reactions to this rule. The rules are made to balance up between the squad. This salary cap ensures no club will have an advantage by spending more than its rivals. But this rule restricts ISL from attracting a player beyond a certain profile.

ISL is now one of the top leagues in Asia. The topper of the league gets the chance to play in AFC Champions League. To compete with Chinese and other top teams in Asia ISL should re-think these rules as the ISL clubs are falling behind their Asian counterparts in signing world-class players just because of this salary cap.
