100th Premier League Goal

On Saturday, Salah became the fastest Liverpool player to achieve 100 league goals when he put his side ahead against Brentford.

Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017, the Egypt international has established himself as a firm favorite at Anfield, and he came through once more to rescue his side out of a tight situation, with a place at the top of the Premier League on the line. However, freshly promoted Brentford leveled the score in the 82nd minute thanks to a goal by YoaneWissa.

About the Match

In early-evening entertainment in west London, Juergen Klopp’s side was unable to capitalize on mistakes made by Manchester United and Chelsea earlier in the day, as it shared the points with Brentford. Instead, Liverpool moved one point clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, maintaining the Premier League’s only unbeaten record.

After Ivan Toney’s late winner was ruled out for offside, Klopp will be relieved. With energetic Brentford gaining the advantage through Ethan Pinnock and Vitaly Janelt balancing after goals from Diogo Jota and Salah, the German coach will be confident that his team will not encounter much tougher competition this season.

Then, after Curtis Jones put Liverpool ahead for the second time, Bees replacement YoaneWissa equalized. In the first ten minutes, both teams were prevented by goal-line clearances, which foreshadowed what was to follow.

First, Salah was denied a seventh-minute opener by Kristoffer Ajer’s outstanding defending, who dove in to knock the ball off the line. At the other end, Bryan Mbeumo grabbed onto Toney’s flick-on and hoisted the ball over Alisson, but Joel Matip was quick to recover and sweep the ball clear from beneath the crossbar.

Brentford showed they could compete with the 2020 champion when they took the lead in the 27th minute. SergiCanos, a Spanish winger who spent three years as a youth at Liverpool but only performed nine minutes for the adult team, got down the Reds’ right flank and fired in a low cross for Pinnock to tap in. The lead, however, was short-lived, as Jordan Henderson curled in a right-wing cross that Jota headed home at the far post.

Henderson teed up Jones on the edge of the area seven minutes before the break, and his shot was deflected onto the post by Pinnock. From the rebound, Jota should have had his second of the afternoon, but David Raya got his body in the way of the shot, and it went wide.

Salah scored his historic goal after the break. As he tucked away Fabinho’s ball over the top, the Egypt striker was initially ruled offside, but a VAR assessment revealed he was onside.

Brentford rallied back, and Janelt rose at the far post to drive the loose ball home after Pontus Jansson dove into slam Ajer’s cross onto the bar. Jones put Liverpool back in front in the 67th minute with a low drive that deflected off Raya in a packed penalty area.

Salah was sent in by Sadio Mane and could have scored goal No. 101, but he chipped the ball into the roof of the net. Wissa appeared at the far post moments later and finished calmly to restore parity before Toney was denied a late winner by the linesman’s flag.
