SAI has given Rs 30,000 to each of the 2749 Khelo India athletes

The Khelo India programme has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.

2893 athletes will receive out of pocket allowance (OPA) under the Khelo India programme. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has transferred Rs 30,000 each to a total of 2749 athletes, as reported on Sunday. A total of Rs 8.25 crore has been given out by the SAI till now. The remaining 144 athletes will receive their money by the end of this month.

SAI said in a press release: “The money has been transferred to the bank accounts of the athletes. A total of 2,893 athletes will be given the pocket allowance with the funds for the remaining 144 athletes to be transferred by the end of this month. The allowance is for the first quarter of 2020-21.”

Athletes from all over India have been enrolled in this programme. This OPA is given to ensure the athletes can have a proper diet and training to maintain high standards in sports.

The top 5 Indian states which have the highest no of athletes in Khelo India OPA are:

  • Maharashtra [386]
  • Haryana [381]
  • Delhi [225]
  • Punjab [202]
  • Tamil Nadu [165]

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports is very happy to give the OPA to all the athletes. He said that the athletes are our priority and will receive full support at all times.

The athletes who are chosen under the Khelo India programme receive a scholarship of Rs 6.28 lakhs. The OPA of Rs 30,000 in each quarter, which sums up to Rs 1.20 lakhs annually is a part of that scholarship. The Khelo India programme is a great initiative by SAI to support the Indian athletes from the grass-root level and help India to grow bigger as a sporting nation.
