Senegal have confirmed that Sadio Mane will not play any part in the 2022 World Cup, after the winger had to undergo surgery for his fibula injury.
After sustaining the injury in the 6-1 win against Werder Bremen, it was hoped that he would be fit in time for the last games of the group stage. However, following the surgery, there will be no involvement from his side in the tournament anymore.
Sadio Mane ruled out for 2022 World Cup
“Sadio Mane underwent successful surgery in Innsbruck by Prof Christian Fink and Dr Andy Williams from London on Thursday evening,” Bayern Munich’s official statement read.
“During the operation, a tendon was reattached to the head of his right fibula. The FC Bayern forward will therefore no longer be available to play for Senegal at the World Cup and will begin his rehab in Munich in the next few days.”
The Senegal team doctor confirmed the captain’s absence from the squad as well, in a press conference held recently. It is absolutely heartbreaking for the winger, considering he was expected to be fit just in time to make an appearance at the World Cup. But now, the African Player of the Year has no option but to sit the competition out.
