India’s chess renaissance on the global esports stage just got bigger. **Nihal Sarin**, the 21-year-old Indian Grandmaster representing **S8UL Esports**, has officially punched his ticket to the **Esports World Cup 2026 Chess event** in Paris — and the journey to get there was anything but straightforward.

## How Nihal Earned His Spot

The road to qualification was a grind across an entire season. The [Champions Chess Tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champions_Chess_Tour) 2025–2026 season included the Speed Chess Championship 2025, Chess.com Open 2026, and the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix circuit spread across three splits.

Nihal narrowly missed direct qualification from the Chess.com Open after finishing fourth — one agonising spot short. But he refused to let that define his season. He accumulated 100 leaderboard points from that event, then added consistently through the TTGP circuit — including a standout second-place finish in the Spring Split worth 34 points — finishing with a total of **139 points** to comfortably secure his EWC 2026 berth.

## Last Year’s Experience Lit the Fire

This isn’t Nihal’s first EWC rodeo. He qualified for EWC 2025 through the Last Chance Qualifier and went on to reach the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Magnus Carlsen. That experience clearly sharpened his hunger.

Nihal himself said: *“Last year’s experience at the EWC gave me a real understanding of how competitive and intense the event is, and it has only motivated me to come back stronger this time.”*

This year, he’s coming in stronger — qualifying directly into the **Group Stage**, skipping the Play-In stage entirely.

## S8UL’s India-First Vision Paying Off

Aravindh Chithambaram — Nihal’s S8UL teammate — qualified earlier through DreamHack Atlanta and will compete in the Play-In stage. Together, they are the **only two Indians** to officially qualify for EWC 2026 Chess so far, with teammate Pranesh M still in contention via the upcoming Last Chance Qualifier.

S8UL Co-founder and CEO Animesh Agarwal summed it up perfectly: *“Seeing two Indian Grandmasters from S8UL earn their spots at one of the biggest global events is a proud moment for the organization.”*

S8UL has also qualified in Honor of Kings (with an all-Indian roster) and Fortnite, as part of its most ambitious international campaign yet — competing across **13 titles** at EWC 2026. The overall event runs from **July 6 to August 23 in Paris**, with over 2,000 players from 100+ countries vying for a record **USD 75 million prize pool**.
