Maharashtrian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad scripted history by becoming the first batter to smash seven sixes in one over. Maharashtra played against Uttar Pradesh in the quarterfinal of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, held at Narendra Modi Stadium’s Ground B. He hit seven sixes against Shiva Singh in the game. Uttar Pradesh had won the toss and chose to bat first but Ruturaj’s 220 runs in 159 balls didn’t let them go far.
He helped the team to get to a total score of 330 runs in 50 overs. He was in his 49th over and had hit 43 runs to left-arm spinner Shiva Singh, completing his 200 runs in the game. At first, he hit four sixes followed by a no-ball, and ended the innings with two sixes.
He had smashed a total of 21 centuries since he made his domestic debut in 2021. He also equaled Rohit Sharma’s record of smashing the most sixes (16) as an Indian in an A List innings.
His performance was a major boost to the Maharashtrian team, and eventually the opponent team, Uttar Pradesh lost by 58 runs.
Gaikwad scored 220 runs off 159 balls, remaining unbeaten, with ten fours and 16 sixes. Shiva had 0 for 88 from nine overs. Gaikwad performed essentially alone, with the other Maharashtra hitters scoring a combined 96 runs from 142 balls.
The 220 not out became the fifth-highest total by an Indian in the format and his 39th double-century in List A cricket. Garry Sobers and Ravi Shahstri had the record for the highest runs in an over which was 36. However, in 1990, Wellington’s Bert Vance mustered 77 runs in an extraordinary circumstance in the Shell trophy against Canterbury.
