A Coach with Ambition and Experience

Rudi Garcia, no stranger to the challenges of top-tier football, brings a wealth of experience to Belgium. His previous stints at clubs like Roma, Napoli, Marseille, and Lyon have equipped him with a deep understanding of managing high-pressure environments. Speaking at his unveiling, Garcia expressed his motivation: “We are ambitious and want to win every game. I feel this is an environment with a lot of positivity.”

Garcia’s last role was with Serie A champions Napoli, a tenure that ended abruptly after 16 games in 2023. Despite that setback, he remains optimistic about guiding Belgium, currently ranked eighth in the FIFA world rankings, back to its glory days.

Rekindling Relations with Key Players

One of Garcia’s first challenges will be resolving lingering disputes and re-integrating key players. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who hasn’t played for Belgium since June 2023 due to a captaincy disagreement with Tedesco, is a primary focus.

“The signals are positive,” Garcia said. “Thibaut is one of Belgium’s greatest players and the best goalkeeper in the world, in my opinion. It would be good to be able to count on him.”

Garcia also plans to meet with other pivotal figures like Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. “They have already experienced a lot, so it can be interesting to discuss and consult with them,” he added, underscoring his collaborative approach to leadership.

Eden Hazard: A Trusted Ally Returns

Adding to the excitement is the involvement of Belgium legend Eden Hazard, who will join Garcia’s backroom staff. The former national team captain, with 126 appearances and 33 goals to his name, was a key player under Garcia at Lille, where they achieved a historic Ligue 1 and French Cup double in 2010–11.

“I talk to Eden a lot,” Garcia revealed. “He will also be a part of the adventure to the [2026] World Cup. He will help us a little.” Hazard’s inclusion is expected to bolster morale and provide invaluable insights, particularly to the younger members of the squad.

Challenges Ahead: A Crucial Nations League Playoff

Garcia’s first major test will be leading Belgium in the Nations League play-offs against Ukraine in March. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, he is tasked with rebuilding a team that has seen fluctuating performances in recent years.

Belgium’s golden generation, featuring stars like Lukaku, De Bruyne, and Courtois, is entering its twilight, making this transitional period critical. However, Garcia’s vision and tactical acumen offer hope for a resurgence.
