“Give Ruben a Break” – Jim Ratcliffe Backs Amorim Despite Manchester United Struggles

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly defended head coach Ruben Amorim, acknowledging that while the Portuguese manager is “not perfect,” he is handling an incredibly difficult situation at Old Trafford.

In a revealing interview, Ratcliffe addressed various challenges facing the club, including financial struggles, managerial changes, and long-term goals. The billionaire businessman also opened up about tough decisions made behind the scenes, such as staff layoffs and costly appointments, in an effort to restore the club’s former glory.

Backing Amorim Despite Struggles

Ruben Amorim has endured a turbulent tenure since replacing Erik ten Hag in November. Under his leadership, Manchester United have secured only five wins in 17 Premier League matches, accumulating just 19 points out of a possible 51. The club currently finds itself languishing in 14th place, far from its desired standing.

Despite these results, Ratcliffe remains confident in Amorim’s abilities, emphasizing the difficult circumstances the coach has had to navigate. “I think he’s done a great job in the circumstances, frankly, with the squad that he’s had available,” said Ratcliffe. “The fact he came in mid-season. Everybody expects miracles overnight. It’s not the way, not real life in my view.”

The Manchester United boss pointed out the significant number of injuries and loaned-out players that have hindered Amorim’s squad selection. Key players such as Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are sidelined due to injuries, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have been loaned out. Given these obstacles, Ratcliffe believes Amorim has exceeded expectations.

Financial Turmoil and Tough Decisions

Ratcliffe did not shy away from discussing Manchester United’s alarming financial state. He revealed that the club was on course to run out of money by the end of 2025, a crisis that forced him to make drastic cost-cutting measures. As part of these reforms, 450 employees out of 1,140 were let go.

The billionaire highlighted the club’s excessive spending, including the shocking revelation that United had been paying a body language consultant £175,000 a year. Despite these cutbacks, Ratcliffe is optimistic about the future. He predicts that within three years, Manchester United will be the most profitable club in the world.

I think the savings we are making now will allow us to build towards our long-term goal,” he stated. His vision, dubbed ‘Mission 21,’ aims to secure Manchester United’s 21st league title by the club’s 150th anniversary in 2028.

Managerial Mistakes: Ten Hag and Ashworth’s Costly Departures

Ratcliffe acknowledged that mistakes were made in the club’s leadership decisions, particularly regarding former manager Erik ten Hag and sporting director Dan Ashworth. The Dutch coach’s contract was extended beyond last season, a decision Ratcliffe now regrets.

The Erik thing is slightly mitigating. The fans wanted him to stay, and there was an emotional response after the FA Cup final,” he admitted. “But, yeah, they were both mistakes. I don’t think we can say much more than that.”

Ashworth’s tenure lasted only five months, costing United £4.1 million in severance. Ratcliffe attributed the decision to “chemistry” issues, declining to elaborate further.

Ruben Amorim’s Potential to Succeed

Despite the difficulties, Ratcliffe is adamant that Amorim has what it takes to lead Manchester United back to the top. When asked if the Portuguese coach is robust enough to succeed where past managers, including José Mourinho, have failed, Ratcliffe responded with certainty.

Yeah, I do, honestly,” he said. “I really, really like Ruben. He’s a very thoughtful guy. Every time I go to the training ground, I speak to Ruben. I sit down and have a cup of coffee with him and tell him where it’s going wrong, and he tells me to f*** off. I like him.”

Chief executive Omar Berrada also voiced support for Amorim, commending his resilience and commitment to implementing his vision for the team.

A Rebuilding Phase for United

While Manchester United continue to navigate one of the most challenging periods in their modern history, Ratcliffe remains confident in the club’s trajectory. He acknowledges that setbacks are inevitable but insists that with the right leadership, including Amorim, the club will rise again.

People need to be patient. Change takes time, but I believe we are moving in the right direction,” Ratcliffe stated.

With his ambitious financial strategy, managerial support, and long-term vision for success, Ratcliffe is determined to restore Manchester United’s dominance in English football. Whether Amorim is the man to lead them there remains to be seen, but for now, he has the full backing of the club’s powerful co-owner.
