HBO Max’s latest comedy gem is finding its footing in the most charming way possible. **Rooster Episode 2 “Trousers”** (March 15, 2026) answered the season’s central question — does Greg take the writer-in-residence job at Ludlow? — while also delivering one of the funniest, most chaotic scenes of 2026 television so far. Yes, Steve Carell spanking Phil Dunster on live BBC News is exactly as unhinged as it sounds.

## Does Greg Accept the Offer? — Ending Explained

When Katie’s future at Ludlow is thrown into question, Walt offers Greg a deal to keep them both on campus. And Greg — ever the “swooper” who can’t stop himself from fixing things — takes it. Greg takes the gig, although he doesn’t even tell his daughter they’re about to be co-workers, simply screaming “See you Monday” before he takes off at the end.

It’s a perfectly characteristic move. He accepts for her sake but immediately creates the very complication he’s trying to avoid — a secret that will inevitably detonate when Katie walks into her lecture hall Monday morning to find her father standing at the front.

Katie also gets her job back , making the episode’s ending a deceptively tidy bow on a messy situation. The calm, of course, is completely temporary.

## The Scene Everyone Is Talking About

The episode’s most memorable sequence arrives when Greg discovers Archie is expecting a child with Sunny. His response? Greg finds out Archie’s fathering a child, runs to his room, and beats him up on live TV because he was talking to BBC News at the time. It’s a ridiculous bit of physical comedy, but you can tell Carell and Dunster had a blast filming the scene where Greg all but spanks Archie on the bed for the world to see. They break a bed. It is glorious.

Archie (Phil Dunster) lets Katie off the hook by claiming to forgive her if she can do the same — find a way to move on from the fact that he slept with a grad student and got her pregnant. [FUTBIN](https://www.futbin.com/evolutions?last_chance=false) Meanwhile, Archie ended up moving in with Sunny and her roommate, signalling the start of an unlikely co-parenting dynamic that looks set to become a major thread going forward.

[Steve Carell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Carell) brings the same emotional groundedness that defined *The Office* and *The Morning Show* to this role, balancing broad physical comedy with genuine warmth.
