Romelu Lukaku took to the Stamford Bridge pitch for the first time as Chelsea hosted an open training session with select fans at Stamford Bridge.
Tammy Abraham recently completed his move to Roma, vacating the number 9 shirt at the club. Lukaku then announced that he will be taking the number 9 shirt at Chelsea. The Belgian previously wore the number 18 shirt during his initial spell at Chelsea. Up until recently, Olivier Giroud wore 18 but the Frenchman left to join AC Milan earlier this summer.
Prior to Lukaku, the number 9 shirt has been deemed ‘cursed’ by many, with strikers like Falcao, Morata, Higuain and Fernando Torres struggling to perform with the number 9 kit. Up until recently, Tammy Abraham performed quite well with the club. But, the arrival of Thomas Tuchel spelt the end of playing time for the youngster because he didn’t fit into the system. As a result, the 23-year-old has joined Jose Mourinho at Roma.
During the open training at the Bridge, one spectator said, “Let’s have it right. Get Werner out of the club.” over the speakers with the player supposedly in attendance. This left the other Stamford Bridge faithful irate, with another fan retorting “No, you get out. Who are you? Who do you think you are?”
According to reports, the abusive fan was chased out of the stadium by angry fans due to his harsh comments about the German forward.
