Chelsea are reportedly willing to try and sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan if they fail to sign Erling Haaland this, or even next summer. The Borussia Dortmund star has been marked at €180 million, and given the current financial climate and the fact that Chelsea just had themselves a spending spree, it looks unlikely that they will shell out that big a figure this summer.
While Timo Werner has been influential as part of the forward line, he isn’t turning out to be the prolific goalscorer that Chelsea invested in last summer, joining the club from RB Leipzig following a personal best season with the Red Bulls.
Moreover, Olivier Giroud will be leaving the club this summer as his contract expires and the two parties have not yet found any agreement regarding an extension. Lastly, Tammy Abraham seems to have been completely frozen out of the squad and had not even made the matchday squad on multiple occasions.
Hence, Chelsea’s pursuit of a recognised striker to help them get the goals they need to improve as an offensive team is justified and is needed, more importantly.
Lukaku joined Chelsea as an 18-year-old but failed to convince his managers that he was good enough at the time. He was since loaned out to West Brom and sold to Everton. Currently starring at Inter Milan, Lukaku’s style of play matches the system that Thomas Tuchel is implementing at Chelsea, which happens to be similar to that of Antonio Conte of employing 3 centre-backs and wing backs.
All that said, the Belgian won’t come cheap and Chelsea will have to fork out a hefty fee if they are to recapture their former player.
