Roma have reached an agreement in principle with Houssem Aouar for a free transfer this summer. The midfielder will be leaving Lyon at the end of June, and has been in talks with the Italian side for the last few months.
An agreement is now in place, with only the official paperwork yet to be signed to finalise the transfer. He has agreed a contract with Roma until 2028, and will be their first signing of the summer.
Houssem Aouar to sign for Roma this summer
Several clubs were interested in signing the player on a free transfer this summer. Milan, Real Betis and Eintracht Frankfurt were all keeping tabs on the situation, but Jose Mourinho’s Roma have seemingly won the race for his signature.
Only a few years ago, clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea were battling it out for him. However, a move to the Premier League did not materialise for him and he is now set to join Serie A to take on a new challenge.
While playing for Lyon, Houssem Aouar has scored 48 goals and provided 37 assists in 258 matches for the club. This season, they haven’t performed as well in Ligue 1 and are currently seventh in the table, outside of European spots.
Roma, on the other hand, are in a tight race for Champions League football next season with Lazio, Juventus and both Milan clubs battling out for the top four spots.
