Just weeks after lifting the World Cup and claiming the Golden Ball as tournament’s best player, Rodri finds himself at the center of Spanish football’s most explosive transfer battle. What once looked like a straightforward path to Real Madrid has suddenly become a genuine two-club race, with Barcelona now firmly in the picture.

## How the Race Flipped

According to ESPN sources, Rodri has given Barcelona the green light to open talks with Manchester City, after Real Madrid’s negotiations with the Etihad club stalled without progress for several days. Barcelona have since made direct contact with both City and Rodri’s camp, as reported by Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic, transforming what appeared to be a Madrid formality into a genuine bidding battle.

## Why City Are in a Bind

Manchester City remain determined to retain their World Cup-winning midfielder, but with just one year left on his contract, the club faces losing him for a reduced fee now or potentially for free next summer. Sources indicate the decision ultimately rests with Rodri himself, as both Spanish giants appear willing to meet City’s valuation.

## What’s Next

With Rodri currently recovering from back surgery and expected to miss the start of the season, his camp is reportedly weighing both options carefully before making a final call. Fans can follow official updates via the [Manchester City official website](https://www.mancity.com/).
