RG Kar Medical College Tragedy
A junior doctor on hunger strike, protesting the recent rape and murder of a female medic at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, was hospitalized on Saturday after his health deteriorated, officials confirmed. This tragic incident has ignited a wave of protests among medical professionals, leading several junior doctors to begin an indefinite hunger strike earlier this month.
RG Kar Medical College: Doctor’s Health Takes a Turn for the Worse
Anustup Mukherjee, one of the junior doctors participating in the hunger strike, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe symptoms, including blood in his stool and intense stomach pain. His condition is described as “serious,” and doctors on-site recommended immediate medical care. “He was in a bad state and needed urgent treatment,” a fellow protestor told PTI. Mukherjee, who had been fasting for days, was taken to Medical College, Kolkata, for further medical attention.
Growing Health Concerns Amid Hunger Strike
The hunger strike, which began on October 5 in Kolkata’s Esplanade area, is raising serious concerns about the health and well-being of the protesting junior doctors. Earlier in the day, another doctor, Alok Varma from North Bengal Medical College, was also hospitalized after his health deteriorated. Varma’s hospitalization followed that of Aniket Mahato, who was admitted to the ICU of R.G. Kar Hospital three days earlier.
The protesting doctors are calling for justice for the female medic, whose murder has shocked the medical community. The prolonged hunger strike, however, is now endangering the lives of those participating. “The government’s inaction is putting lives at risk. More doctors are falling ill as the protest goes on,” said one of the protestors, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
Demand for Justice
The protest is rooted in the frustration and outrage within the medical community following the brutal attack on their colleague. The hunger strike serves as a powerful call for action, demanding that the state government take immediate steps to address both the tragic crime and the safety of healthcare workers.
As more doctors face severe health complications, the need for a resolution becomes increasingly urgent. Despite the growing risk to their health, the protesting doctors remain committed to their cause, standing in solidarity for justice.
