Reliance Jio already became the market leader in terms of Wireless subscribers months back when we saw the decline of BSNL and VI. The two major players: Airtel and Jio, have added a lot of subscribers from VI, and BSNL has almost evaporated from the market because of its bad service.
As per the latest TRAI Subscription Report for June 2021, Reliance Jio has gained over a whopping 54 lakh subscribers in a month, and Bharti Airtel has also added 38 lakh subscribers. On the other hand, VI & BSNL lost 42 lakh & 9 lakh subscribers respectively. MTNL also lost 4,846 subscribers.
This is a huge deal because Jio and Airtel are flocking away customers from both BSNL and Vodafone Idea or VI. This is mainly because of the reliability both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel is providing by pouring money and maintaining quality service.
In wireline space, Jio added double the subscribers than Airtel, and here too, we see the decline of BSNL, MTNL and other telcos. Jio & Airtel added 1.97 lakh & 0.97 lakh wireline subscribers respectively, whereas BSNL & MTNL lost 1.93 lakh & 0.14 lakh subscribers respectively.
This is another field where both Jio and Airtel are also targeting as this market is constantly growing as more and more consumers are opting for broadband internet. Also, the quality of Fiber connections by both Airtel and Jio, with lucrative plans, indeed people are preferring the best they can get for themselves.
Now, coming to the market shares in terms of wireless subscribers as of 30th June, we see BSNL has shrunk to even less than 10% of the market share, which is an alarm bell for the company. However, as we see, almost 90% of the telecom sector has fallen in hands of Jio, Airtel, VI and others, mostly due to the lack the finance and leadership of these PSUs.
