Rebecca Welch makes history as the first female referee in the Premier League

Rebecca Welch became the first female referee to ever officiate a game in the Premier League in the Fulham vs Burnley match this past weekend. The Clarets defeated Fulham 2-0 in a rather shocking result, considering the Cottagers’ decent run of form.

After serving as a fourth official in November, she finally made the step up to the main role after a trailblazing run through the divisions. She officiated her first match in the EFL only two years ago, and has now made history by paving the way for women in the sport at the top level.

Rebecca Welch officiated several FA Cup games in 2022 after her EFL spell, before officiating in the National League, Women’s Super League and the Women’s World Cup earlier this year. After her impressive performances at these levels, she was given the green light to officiate in the Premier League.

And her performance was as expected, maintaining control of the game and waving away fouls when unnecessary. She received warm support from the fans and was able to keep her composure in a match where the home crowd were on their feet.

And this opens up the pathway for more women to be included in the role, being recognised for their skill and not rejected for their gender.
