Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe Ruled Out for 3 Weeks with Thigh Injury, Set to Miss Madrid Derby

Real Madrid’s talismanic forward Kylian Mbappe will miss three weeks of football after sustaining a thigh injury during Real Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Alaves.

This unfortunate development means Mbappe will be absent from key fixtures, including the highly anticipated Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The injury has added to the club’s mounting list of fitness concerns as they prepare to take on their city rivals at Wanda Metropolitano.

A Painful Setback for Mbappe and Real Madrid

The 25-year-old French forward suffered the injury during Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Alaves on Tuesday. Mbappe had been performing at his usual high standards, even netting his seventh goal of the season in the 40th minute to help put Madrid 2-0 ahead. He played 80 minutes before asking to be substituted, citing discomfort in his thigh. Arda Guler replaced him as Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti responded to Mbappe’s request to avoid exacerbating the issue.

Despite Mbappe’s efforts, Real Madrid’s defense struggled in the final stages of the match, conceding two late goals to Alaves. Nevertheless, they held on to secure a 3-2 victory, but the bigger blow came the next day when the club confirmed the severity of Mbappe’s injury.

Official Diagnosis: Three-Week Layoff

Real Madrid released a statement on Wednesday confirming that Mbappe had suffered an injury to the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. The French forward is now expected to be out of action until mid-October, a significant blow for the Spanish giants as they navigate a critical period of their campaign.

Mbappe’s injury means he will miss crucial fixtures, including the Madrid derby and Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Lille on October 2. The latter would have marked Mbappe’s first return to France since his summer transfer from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Real Madrid. Fans and pundits alike were eagerly anticipating his reunion with a French club at the European level.

Rumored Return After International Break

Though Mbappe is expected to be out for three weeks, there is optimism regarding his return following the international break in October. The French captain is expected to miss France’s UEFA Nations League matches during this period, but Real Madrid fans are hopeful that Mbappe will be available for key fixtures later in the month.

The rumor mill suggests that the forward is targeting a return to action on October 20, when Real Madrid visit Balaidos to face Celta Vigo in La Liga. If his recovery goes as planned, Mbappe could also feature in the highly anticipated Champions League home fixture against Borussia Dortmund on October 23. Most crucially, his return is expected just in time for El Clásico, where Madrid will face arch-rivals Barcelona on October 27, a fixture that could be pivotal in the La Liga title race.

Mounting Injury Concerns for Real Madrid

The loss of Kylian Mbappe comes at a time when Real Madrid is already grappling with several other injuries to key players. David Alaba, Brahim Diaz, Dani Ceballos, and Eduardo Camavinga have all been sidelined, creating significant challenges for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad selection.

Brahim Diaz is expected to be out until mid-November due to a hip abductor injury sustained in a match against Real Sociedad. Dani Ceballos, who suffered an ankle injury before the September international break, remains unavailable for a few more weeks. The one silver lining for Real Madrid is the anticipated return of Camavinga, who is nearing recovery from a knee injury and could feature in the derby.

Adding to the concerns is the long-term absence of David Alaba. The Austrian centre-back suffered an ACL injury last December, which required two surgeries to repair. While Alaba is making good progress in his recovery, he is not expected to return to action until the end of this year, leaving a notable gap in Madrid’s defensive lineup.

The club also had a scare with Dani Carvajal, who missed the Alaves game due to a knock, but reports suggest that the right-back will be fit in time to face Atletico Madrid. This will offer some much-needed relief to Ancelotti’s defense.

Mbappe’s Impressive Start Cut Short

Kylian Mbappe’s start to life at Real Madrid had been nothing short of impressive. The French international took a few games to settle in following his high-profile summer move from PSG but has since hit his stride, scoring five goals in seven La Liga appearances. His contributions have helped Madrid maintain their title chase, with the team locked in a battle with Barcelona, now managed by Hansi Flick.

Mbappe’s immediate impact on the pitch was expected, especially considering his status as the club’s highest-paid player. His annual salary of £13 million ($17 million) places him at the top of Real Madrid’s wage hierarchy, surpassing other star players like Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham. However, this injury threatens to disrupt his momentum just as he was beginning to fully integrate into the team.

Ancelotti’s Tactical Dilemma

With Mbappe out for the foreseeable future, Ancelotti faces a tough task in adjusting his attacking setup. The coach will need to rely on the likes of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Bellingham to fill the void left by Mbappe. While Vinicius has been in fine form, it remains to be seen how the team will fare without their newly crowned goal-scorer.

Atletico Madrid will likely see this as an opportunity to exploit their rivals’ weakened attack. Real Madrid, however, boasts a deep squad capable of weathering such storms, and Ancelotti will hope his other attackers step up to maintain the team’s winning streak in La Liga.

Focus on Recovery and Upcoming Matches

As for Mbappe, the forward will now focus on rehabilitation in hopes of returning to action as soon as possible. While Real Madrid’s medical team has projected a three-week absence, the club will undoubtedly be cautious in managing their star player’s recovery, especially given the demands of the upcoming fixtures.

Real Madrid faces a crucial stretch of the season after the international break, with key matches on the horizon. The return of Mbappe could provide a significant boost, especially with the all-important El Clásico against Barcelona looming on October 27. Before that, Mbappe’s potential return for Real Madrid’s La Liga clash against Celta Vigo and their Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund could prove decisive in shaping their campaign.
