Real Madrid’s honorary president Amancio Amaro passes away at 83

Real Madrid legend and honorary president Amancio Amaro has passed away at the age of 83. He served as both a player and a coach of the club, having joined them initially from Deportivo de La Coruna. 

He won the sixth European Cup with Real Madrid, and also lifted nine LaLiga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies. The winger played for the first team between 1962 and 1976.

Real Madrid honorary president Amancio Amaro passes away at the age of 83 

Amancio Amaro played 471 games for Real Madrid in the 14 seasons he spent with them. He scored 155 goals during this time, finishing as the top scorer in 1969 and 1970.

In 1964, Amaro finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting, and also won the Euros with Spain. He hung up his boots in 1976, finishing as the fourth-highest top scorer for Real Madrid behind Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Paco Gento. 

The Spaniard led Castilla to a second division title in 1984, when he was the manager of the youth team. Then, he took charge of the first team and assembled the ‘Quinta del Buitre’. 

“Real Madrid, the club’s president and its Board of Directors are deeply saddened by the passing of Amancio Amaro, Real Madrid’s honorary president and one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football,” read Real Madrid’s official statement.

“Real Madrid would like to extend its condolences and sympathy to his wife Consuelo, his children Iscar, Belen, Amancio, Patricia, Marcos and Claudia, his brother Juan Carlos, his grandchildren and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones.”
