Raphael Varane was on the verge of leaving Manchester United after his centre-back partner Sergio Ramos signed for PSG on a free transfer after failing to negotiate a deal. Varane was on the lookout for a new adventure and the Premier League was his main choice.

Manchester United has been linked to Varane for a long time and after the player was officially available on the market, they decided to give it a go.

Varane will now join Manchester United this summer and pair with Harry Maguire. United have also signed Sancho as they hope to challenge their city rivals, Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

Real Madrid have now officially announced the departure of Varane to Manchester United.

Real Madrid wrote: “Real Madrid CF and Manchester United FC have agreed to transfer the player Raphaël Varane.”

“Our club thanks you for your professionalism and exemplary behavior during the ten seasons in which you have defended our shirt, with which you have won 18 titles: 4 Champions League, 4 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 3 Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups.”

“Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphaël Varane and his family and wishes him the best of luck in this new stage of his professional career.”

Real Madrid will be without both their first-choice centre-back, Ramos and Varane, next season. Newly-signed David Alaba is expected to partner with Militao and Nacho at the heart of the Real Madrid defence as it seems unlikely they will sign a new centre-back.

Real Madrid will only open their cheque book if Mbappe can be lured to the Bernabeu this summer. It will be interesting to see how Perez will now manage the Madrid squad before the start of the new 2021-22 season.
