Real Madrid: Another step closer to signing Kylian Mbappe?

Real Madrid and Manchester United are almost on the verge of finalizing the transfer of Raphael Varane. This comes at a time when the Spanish side seeks finances for their dream signing if it were to happen this summer. Manchester United could shell out as much as 50 million euros for the World cup winner. And we believe this might just be the next big step towards the signing of Kylian Mbappe.

Real Madrid isn’t showing any signs of making any big signing this summer. This will obviously exclude a possible acquisition of Mbappe. If at all PSG were to sell Mbappe, Real’s finances would be taking a huge hit to buy the Frenchman. Los Blancos will need to sell some existing players to cushion this financial hit. This is where the sale of Varane plays a big role. It is the first step of the many needed.

What about the other Real players?

Sergio Ramos’s departure relieved Real of his 15m euros net salary. Real Madrid has currently lost both their starter center backs and isn’t expected to sign a replacement this summer. However, Real did sign David Alaba on a free transfer. He will play a huge role in shaping the defense in the coming season. Along with him, Nacho and Eder Militao will also guard the backline. This also means that homegrown talents Victor Chust, Mario Gila, or Jesus Vallejo will get a chance to book their spot in the fourth center-back spot. Now, this seems like a good sporting project.

Real Madrid is just saving funds for Mbappe as of now. This is also a reason why Lucas Vazquez was given a new contract. His wages are bearable and keeping him is more economic than signing a replacement. Real Madrid dealt with the pandemic well, economically. This keeps them in a relatively strong financial position. They enjoyed profits of 874,000 euros in the last financial year. This is really commendable seeing how other clubs were making losses in the same period.

The Next Step

Officials at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu are very well aware that the finances needed to pursue Mbappe this summer will be huge. Paris Saint-Germain won’t be looking for anything less than 180m euros for the forward. Currently, PSG does not look in the mood to even listen to offers as they want to keep the best for themselves. Their aim at European glory seems closer than ever and Mbappe would play a key role in it. Even though his contract expires in 2022, and he hasn’t signed any contract with them yet, they’re willing to bet on their chances.

It will be interesting to watch how Real Madrid manages to convince PSG for the sale. Both the clubs share a good relationship. Although if the deal was to happen, Real would also have to shell out the forward’s huge wages too. Mbappe would expect upwards of 20m euros net per season. This will make him the highest-paid Real player. The financials of this transfer would only be feasible if Real offloads some players. They already have 28 senior squad players and can only register 25. But then again, like Barcelona, there aren’t many discardable players who could fetch major money.

The ones who could fetch major transfer fees, like Vinicius, aren’t expendable. Luka Jovic could also be sold, but this will mean taking a huge loss on their initial investment in the Serbian striker. This is the reason why selling Varane for such a large transfer fee, is quite a significant move for Real Madrid.
