Plans for the European Super League are starting to materialise once again, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly speaking to over 60 clubs over the proposed tournament. It will include the “Fallen Giant” clubs that are no longer at their best across Europe, such as Red Star Belgrade, Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord and more.
The first season will see the participation of all these clubs, with a division system set to be in place as well. This would allow a huge number of clubs to participate while replacing the existing format of the Champions League, Europa League and the Europa Conference League.
European Super League plans come up again with case verdict due next week
An official verdict on the case between UEFA and the European Super League is expected next week. And in anticipation of the final outcome, Perez has already started to prepare a plan for the tournament. The Real Madrid president is working alongside Joan Laporta, the president of their eternal rivals Barcelona, to make this happen.
After Andrea Agnelli resigned from his post as Juventus president recently, only the two Spanish giants are in place to spearhead the rogue tournament. And by the looks of things, they are continuing to try and break free of the current model.
With guaranteed income for all the club’s, it will surely provide a more financially enticing opportunity for everyone. Moreover, the change in format of the Champions League from next season will see it adopt the same one that the European Super League once proposed.
The organising company, A22 Sports, is prepared to set things in motion once the verdict is revealed on 21 December. Thereafter, we could be seeing the end of the Champions League as we know it, if the decision is ruled against UEFA.
