Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona: Benzema returns to put Los Blancos back on top of La Liga

Real Madrid picked up a 3-1 win over rivals Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season. With the win, Madrid are now at the top of the La Liga table with 25 points while Barcelona are second with 22. 

Despite the absence of Thibaut Courtois, Los Blancos were able to pick up the win. Andriy Lunin had a great day on the field, stepping up when called upon against his team’s greatest rivals.

Real Madrid win 2022 El Clasico 3-1 

Karim Benzema was given a start in the big game, and delivered just as he has been doing for a while now. The Frenchman netted the opener for Real Madrid after a save from Marc Andre ter Steven sent the ball out to his feet.

And later in the first half, Fede Valverde doubled their lead with a well taken effort from long range. 

Madrid’s third goal, a beautiful curling effort scored by Karim Benzema – was a was ruled out for offside, halting the striker’s celebrations midway. 

Robert Lewandowski had a chance to get his side back into the game. But, the Barcelona number 9 missed an absolute sitter of an opportunity. 

Ferran Torres ultimately gave Barcelona a fighting chance in the game, scoring in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1 for the visitors. However, Rodrygo converted a penalty that Eric Garcia conceded in the 90th minute to make it 3-1 and earn all three points for Los Blancos.
