According to Canal+ journalist Damien Dubras, Raphael Varane could still make the France national team for the 2022 World Cup. The central defender left the pitch in tears against Chelsea after sustaining an injury, and things did not look good for him at the time.
However, an initial assessment has suggested that the injury is to the biceps femoris in the thigh. And, it is not as bad as was feared during the game.
Raphael Varane could still make it to the World Cup
France’s vice captain could be sidelined for the first game of the World Cup, since that is expected to be too soon. However, he would be able to play for the rest of the tournament in case he is called up to the national team.
Didier Deschamps will already be without N’Golo Kante, Mike Maignan and Paul Pogba in Qatar since the trio is injured. The loss of Raphael Varane would be another huge blow to the team.
However, due to the abundance of talent that the French national team has, the likes of Dayot Upamecano or William Saliba could step in. It remains to be seen whether the coach will call up Varane considering that it is a race against time for him to be fully fit.
