Ralf Rangnick speaks out about major changes to English football

Ralf Rangnick has suggested a number of improvements for Premier League clubs to be better managed. Among the changes, he has suggested that the English clubs should pull out from the Carabao Cup and increase the number of substitutes to five.

The International FA first introduced the five substitute rule due to the pandemic, but let it stay due to the positive impacts. The Premier League is the only one of Europe’s top leagues to go back to the previous system based on team voting.

Here is what the Manchester United boss had to say:

Ralf Rangnick suggests drastic improvements

Only four weeks after being named the Manchester United boss, the German has started to suggest changes to the landscape.

‘England is the only top league that plays two cup competitions. In France they abolished the second one,’ Rangnick said.

‘This is something we could speak about and discuss. The League Cup is still kept for the third and fourth division teams to improve the financial situations of those clubs. But in a tight calendar with too many games, this is something to speak and discuss.

‘The other thing is the FA Cup and the replays. That’s been changed and that’s a good thing. In other countries you never have replays, those are topics we could speak about.’

The smaller clubs in England believe that the five subs rule will benefit stronger clubs much more. The involvement in the League Cup and FA Cup replays is also under fire due to how much it clogs up the schedule.
