Ralf Rangnick confirms he rejected Chelsea job

Ralf Rangnick is set to be the interim manager of Manchester United until the end of the season, according to the Athletic. The 63-year-old has a verbal agreement with the English club.

The main tipping point is that he will be allowed to stay on as a consultant up to two years after the managerial spell. This will allow him to have a say in the club choices and future.

He is currently working as the sporting director of Lokomotiv Moscow and is in talks with the club to let him leave. Manchester United are prepared to accept his proposal for being a consultant of the club. Once Moscow allows Rangnick to leave, the agreement is set to be official with the Red Devils.

Ralf Rangnick told Man Utd board on Monday he’ll accept this interim job only if future ‘consultancy’ with power on club choices will be included in the deal. Man Utd are prepared to accept this condition. 🔴🇩🇪 #MUFC

Rangnick has managed Schalke, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. He is credited with the rise of Gegenpressing, and is an inspirational figure for the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp, both of whom have gone on to become top coaches in the Premier League.

Upon Chelsea’s dismissal of Frank Lampard last winter, Rangnick was one of the options considered before Tuchel was hired. He is not interested in being a temporary manager and is mainly interested in United’s project because he will be allowed to stay on as a consultant.

Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, Ernesto Valverde and Brendan Rodgers have all been contacted for the job, but have either rejected or not reached an agreement with the United board. As a result, Ralf Rangnick will take the reins from Michael Carrick who is currently in charge of the first team.
