Rahul Dravid : In a highly anticipated move, Rahul Dravid is set to rejoin the Rajasthan Royals (RR) as their head coach for the 2025 IPL season. This announcement follows the conclusion of his highly successful tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, which culminated in a historic T20 World Cup win in June 2024.

Dravid, who previously captained RR during the 2012 and 2013 IPL seasons and later served as team director and mentor from 2014 to 2015, has signed a new contract with the franchise. His return is expected to bring a fresh wave of optimism to a team that has not secured an IPL title since its inaugural season in 2008.

Let’s have a look into more details: Rahul Dravid – Rajasthan Royals

Dravid’s relationship with RR has been long and distinguished. Having led the team as captain and mentored them during their formative years, his return is a strategic move to reignite the franchise’s competitive edge. During his earlier stints, Dravid was instrumental in shaping the team’s fortunes, and his experience and leadership are seen as crucial assets as the Royals aim to break their title drought.

In addition to Dravid’s appointment, the Royals are also poised to bring on board Vikram Rathour as one of Dravid’s assistant coaches. Rathour, a former India batting coach and selector, has a solid track record and is expected to complement Dravid’s coaching style effectively.

Continuity with Kumar Sangakkara

While Dravid will take over as head coach, current director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara will continue with the franchise but will focus on managing their teams in other leagues, such as the Paarl Royals in the SA20 and Barbados Royals in the CPL. Sangakkara’s ongoing involvement ensures a seamless transition and continuity in the Royals’ strategic planning.

The Rajasthan Royals have had a mixed bag of results in recent years. They finished as runners up in 2022 but failed to make the playoffs in 2023. Although they reached Qualifier 2 in 2024, their journey was cut short. With Dravid’s return, the franchise is hopeful that his Midas touch will finally lead them to IPL glory.

Dravid’s leadership is expected to synergize well with RR captain Sanju Samson, who rose through the ranks under Dravid’s guidance in the Under 19 setup. The duo’s familiarity and mutual respect are likely to foster a productive environment.
