Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to Barcelona, and according to Spanish publication ‘Sport’, the move was close to happening this summer itself.

Since Barcelona knew they were in a difficult financial situation, the plan was to bring the player in on a loan or using players like Griezmann or Dembele as leverage. However, they were unable to complete the task. Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany still has his eyes on the Manchester City winger, and is expected to try for him in the January transfer window next.

The England international has fallen down the list of preferences for Pep Guardiola, and he knows it himself. As a result, he is willing to make the switch to Camp Nou should the chance present itself in the January window. According to the report by Sport, the final decision rests with Pep Guardiola. Even if he chooses to sanction the sale of the player, he has several options already part of the squad as replacements.

Jack Grealish operates on the left flank, and was signed for £100 million this summer. Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva are also present as experienced players who can operate on the wide spots. Ferran Torres and Phil Foden are two young players who can also be called upon if needed, and will be good replacements for Sterling.

The 26-year-old has played 297 games for Manchester City scoring 115 goals and providing 87 assists. While there is no final decision from Guardiola yet, the January window could see him leave City if his sale is sanctioned.
