Former Ajax and Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for importing 1360 kg of cocaine from Brazil into the Netherlands through the port of Belgium. The Amsterdam District Court revealed that phone tapping provided conclusive evidence that the player was engaging in drug trafficking, with the items hidden alongside shipments of salt.
The 32-year-old was also sentenced to 18 months in prison last year in absentia for stabbing his cousin in the knee. The fight took place in 2020, and Promes has since appealed the decision. He also denies the charges of shipping, possessing the drugs.

Promes currently plays for Russian club Spartak Moscow, and did not appear for the trial. “This makes it even more objectionable that the suspect tries to increase his wealth (and possibly also prestige in certain circles) through large international drug transports,” the court said.
Since Russia doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the Netherlands, Promes will be able to avoid conviction if he continues to stay in Russia. However, his involvement in the first team could take a hit now that the court has passed a definitive verdict against him.
Promes was once part of the decorated Ajax side that made it to the semifinals of the 2019 Champions League. He has also made 50 appearances for the Dutch national team, but was discarded in 2021 after the charges.
