The reports in the market suggest that we might see a new chip from Qualcomm as they are said to be working on a new high-end ARM chip. The model name of this upcoming SoC by Qualcomm is said to be Snapdragon SC8280. Most probably, it will be an upgrade to Snapdragon 8cx and 8cx Gen 2. The latter comes with eight gigabytes of LPPDR5 RAM. Currently, most of the Windows 10 machines are run by Snapdragon 8cx or 8cx Gen 2 SoC.
This new computer SoC has been tested on a notebook with a 14-inch display. The test included the Snapdragon X55 integrated modem for 5G connectivity. The reports suggest that the new chip will have a similar size to the earlier Snapdragon 8cx (20 x 17 millimetres), but it might have eight more cores than 8cx. The CPU configurations or specs are yet to be revealed, but they might use ARM’s Cortex-X1 cores to get the best performance.
The ARM-based chips are mostly with lightweight and portable machines. This is because they do not require a separate cooling system to keep the temperature within the range.
Qualcomm has proven to be a beast in building mobile processors. Now, after acquiring NUVIA, they might be willing to go all out and innovate best chips for the PC world.
Reports also tell that two variants have been tested which are 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM. This is surely a huge advantage to Qualcomm as compared to their competitor, Apple, whose M1 Macs are limited to 16GB memory.
However, going above in one aspect does not eliminate the dominance of Apple’s chips. Let’s not forget about Apple’s new chips for the latest MacBooks, Apple Silicon, which has already being appreciated by many people. It will be amazing to see how Qualcomm fights with Apple in PC chips market.
