Qualcomm is also rumoured to be in talks with several heavyweights to obtain a slice of the burgeoning handheld gaming business, and if those conversations go well, we could see a Snapdragon-branded handheld launch shortly.
The conversations appear to be in their early stages, with Revegnus reporting that Qualcomm SVP Alex Katouzian is in talks with Nintendo and Sony to produce gear that may be similar to the competition.
It is unclear how this potential collaboration will play out. On the one hand, we can picture Qualcomm wanting some help from Nintendo in terms of the design and functioning of the handheld gaming system.
In terms of Sony, Qualcomm may collaborate with the Japanese company to develop and launch exclusive mobile games optimised for the Snapdragon platform.
Whereas Sony and Nintendo acquire their CPUs from other vendors, it has years of expertise designing and bringing its own solutions to the market. Its Adreno 740 from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is now the fastest Android smartphone GPU, competing with Apple’s A16 Bionic.
A portable gaming handheld, on the other hand, will have more area for heat dissipation, implying that Qualcomm may not simply outfit the chassis with another smartphone SoC and call it a day. The chip maker is slated to debut the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 next year with its own Oryon cores, made feasible by its Nuvia acquisition.
Fortunately, Qualcomm is rumoured to be working on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, a chipset with a 12-core arrangement intended for notebook computers. This gaming console has something similar, with the gadget running Android right out of the box.
