Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022: What we can expect from the tournament?

The 2022 Qatar World Cup is only a year away and will be held in winter to cope with the hot temperature during the summer. The host nation is trying to extract every ounce of profit from the event. The Qatar World Cup is valued at £5.3 billion.

An investigative report by the Daily Mail reveals the true nature of events in Qatar in the build up to the tournament. Since the hosts are not very vocal and cheering doesn’t come ‘naturally’ to them, they are planning to hire noisy fans and practically buy support for the home team.

"The fact that the World Cup will be in Qatar is wrong. The workers work non-stop, in 50 degrees heat, with poor nutrition and no water. It's all wrong." pic.twitter.com/hCbx4WvExx

A number of trenches have also been dug up in Doha to improve the water drainage system. This is due for the prevention of floods, following the immense rain in October three years ago. Clearly, a huge amount of work needs to be done to ensure that the country is ready for the tournament.

Qatar did not have the infrastructure needed to host the tournament, and is still under construction. The final will be held at the Lusail Stadium, around which the images of Robert Lewandowski and Neymar can be found.

Atleast 1400 Nepali workers have sadly lost their lives while constructing stadiums in Qatar.

The ambassador of the tournament, David Beckham, is also expected to be heavily promoted as the tournament gets closer. The owner of Inter Miami will arrive in Qatar for the Qatar GP next week. And it is expected that he will promote the tournament in some capacity.

Beckham’s association with the Qatar World Cup has been heavily criticised. And the main reason is behind the exploitation of the stadium workers. The immigrant workers have been denied payments, and have been asked to clear out before August of 2022.

A number of players have recognised this issue, and protested against the exploitation of the workers as well. But, it remains to be seen whether there will be any change in the plight of the construction workers.
