Puget system’s Unreal Engine Test on AMD’s Threadripper TR and TR Pro ranges

A Washington-based custom workstation builder, Puget Systems, has put together a fascinating, and very expensive, Unreal Engine-based comparison test. In the test, many of the best workstation powerhouses were included such as AMD’s beasts, the Zen 2-based Threadripper (TR), and Threadripper Pro (TR Pro) ranges.

The custom builder even decided to throw in the mighty 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and also add in some players like the Intel Core i9-10980XE and i9-10900K processors. Of course, intel’s players cannot outperform the 64-core Zen 2 TR Pro in an Unreal Engine (4.25) test. They were just there for the sake of comparison.

For the graphics, the custom workstation maker used the powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB graphics card, which helped the CPU deal with the Unreal Engine compiling and packaging benchmarks. Coming to the CPU core, the Intel Core i9-10900K scored a handy baseline mark of 1,000 points. The Zen 3 part on the other hand was much faster at compiling source code than the Comet Lake chip (889 seconds vs. 1,327 seconds), and the Ryzen 9 5950X came away with a total score of 1,492 points.

AMD’s Threadripper Pro 3955X, with its 16-cores, comes at a bargain price of US$1,149, and in the Unreal Engine, the test had the worst-performance out of the six TR SKUs tested, lying behind the 24-core TR part and 32-core TR and TR Pro chips.

However, the TR 3990X which comes at US$3,990, and the US$5,489 TR Pro 3995WX, had a tough competition. Both the 64-core monsters scored over 2,500 points, with the 3995WX edging out the 3990X by 2,679 points to 2,524 points in the overall performance score.

From what we know is that the TR Pro chips can utilize 128x PCIe 4 lanes (64x for non-TR Pro), which makes them the best workstation processors currently in the market. according to the test conducted we also found that the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (US$799) and Intel Core i9-10900K (US$488) performed more than admirably in the challenging Unreal Engine benchmark battery.
