PSG manager news: Christophe Galtier is in talks with the board for a compensation package, as he will not be in charge for the coming season. In the 2022/23 season, the Parisians were able to win the Ligue 1 title but only by one point. On the other hand, they were unsuccessful in their domestic cup competition and the Champions League.
The board does not believe that Galtier has what it takes to manage the big egos in the locker room. And as a result, they are parting ways with him and considering Nagelsmann, who most recently managed Bayern Munich. The German was sacked only a few months ago, and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.
He has since been on vacation, and has been considered by several clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham and Napoli. But, there has been no agreement between them based on their discussions. As a result, he has remained on Bayern’s payroll and away from football for the time being.
PSG news: How has Christophe Galtier performed as PSG manager?
Galtier was named the new PSG manager at the start of the season, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. He had stunned the Argentine to the Ligue 1 title with Lille, which made him the top candidate for the role. But his limited experience in European competition proved to be the vital point of difference between the two parties.Â
PSG were eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16 stage against Bayern Munich, who they played in the 2020 final. The result was the same this time around as well, with the Parisians being unable to score a single goal over two legs and losing their composure on the pitch to allow the Bavarians passage into the quarter finals of the competition.
The draw has perhaps been too harsh on PSG, who have been drawn against the big teams like Real Madrid, Bayern and Manchester City relatively early in the knockout stages. But, these are the games that they need to win in order to ascend to the top of European football. And so far, no manager has been able to lead them to that stage.
PSG manager news: Julian Nagelsmann will not become new PSG manager
Although Galtier has publicly stated that he thinks he deserves another season in charge, the hierarchy at the club believes otherwise. Nagelsmann had talks with the PSG board over the job, and the two clubs have failed to reach an agreement over the details of the role.
Discussions between the two parties went on for two weeks, and they have mutually decided to not work together. PSG are already in talks with another manager to take over the first team.
