Yes, finally, Mac Studio is here as the last-minute rumours suggested, while there’s no M2 chipset here but a new monster i.e. M1 Ultra is also announced at the same “Peak Performance” Apple event. The first device which would actually use this insane kind of performance is the new Mac Studio, a perfect device that sits between the entry-level Mac mini and the humongous Mac Pro.
However, as per the latest claims Apple made, this Mac Studio with M1 Ultra could easily demolish the highest-end Mac Pro with 28 core Xeon CPU and Radeon Pro W6900X graphics. Incredible isn’t it? This has a small form factor similar to the Mac mini but is bulgier in the height, looks as if an elongated Mac mini but still being very mobile and portable.
This Mac Studio has this incredible small appearance which Apple brags of because professionals will have to give less space for great performance. The design element borrows similarities with the original Mac mini as you see the Apple logo on the top and the overall form factor still being very user-friendly.
Like the Mac mini, you have this body with tons of port at the front and rear end and enough perforations bother at the back and at the bottom for better airflow. Though there will be a humongous chip like M1 Max or M1 Ultra, the overall form factor is still modest and the raised bottom helps to suck in air for the fans present just above the logic board.
As you see in the demonstration of Apple, the Mac Studio will intelligently suck in cool air inside and the two fans spinning opposite to each other will help to gush the air into the chamber. This air takes the heat away and the ultimate dissipation takes place through the minute perforations done at the back of the Mac Studio, clever engineering!
On the rear end of the device, you have a lot of ports including 4 USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, 10Gb ethernet port, a port for the power adapter, two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, a headphone jack and finally the power on/off button.
On the front, you have two USB Type-C ports that are also Thunderbolt 4 capable and an SDXC card slot.
Apple says you can connect up to four Studio displays via a single Mac Studio and still have enough room to plug in a TV as well, incredible, isn’t it?
Now, in terms of performance, Apple was bold enough to make some big claims with its new Mac Studio, comparing it against the likes of its 27-inch Intel Core i9 power iMac and it says, the M1 Max powered Mac Studio is 2.5 times faster than it and is still 50% faster than the 16-core Xeon based Mac Pro. Coming to the GPU performance, Apple says the Mac Studio with M1 Max will be 3.4 times faster than the 27-inch iMac with Radeon Pro 5700XT.
On the other hand, the M1 Ultra powered Mac Studio is 90% faster than a 16-core Xeon powered Mac Pro in terms of CPU performance and it even goes to beat the highest-end 28-core Xeon powered Mac Pro by as much as 60%.
These are some insane levels of raw CPU performance numbers and in terms of GPU, the M1 Ultra’s GPU is able to deliver 4.5 times better performance than the 27-inch iMac with Radeon Pro 5700XT and 80% faster than the humongous AMD Radeon Pro W6900X GPU.
While max VRAM memory tops out at 48GB, Apple is claiming to provide 64GB unified memory with the M1 Max and up to 128GB with the M1 Ultra powered Mac Studio. Apple will use SSD capacity up to 8TB and these SSDs will have a peak of 7.4GB/s speeds, and the company claims its Mac Studio can handle up to 18 8K ProRes 422 video streams at once, making it the only desktop PC to be able to do so.
Apple even claims that the M1 Max inside this Mac Studio is 3.4 times faster than the fastest iMac while the M1 Ultra powered Mac Studio is 80% faster than the fastest Mac Pro. This is an incredible feat achieved by Apple and if all the claims are considered to be true, giving such performance in such a compact form factor will indeed be game-changing.
Apple says its efficiency can save a lot of energy when compared to a typical desktop these days with the help of its new Mac Studio. Also, the new Apple Mac Studio is made up of 100% recycled rare earth elements in the magnets and 100% recycled tin is used in the solder of the main logic board, while this product too follows Apple’s mission to make 100% carbon neutral products by 2030.
Overall, the new Mac Studio is a great device for professionals who are looking for no-compromise performance and that too in such a small form factor is really impressive. Also, you have both Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity and will blend well with the Apple accessories it ships in the market.
Coming to the most crucial part i.e. the pricing, much expectedly, Apple has its Mac Studio desktops pricier than ever, the M1 Max powered base variant with 32GB unified memory, 512GB SSD starts at $1999 while the M1 Ultra powered variant with 64GB unified memory and 1TB SSD will cost you a heft $3999.
