The summer transfer window of 2021 has now closed down, and the squads have been finalised for the next few months at the very least. This summer, the Premier League clubs have been far more active than the rest of Europe, and the numbers speak for themselves.

England – £1.14bn

The most expensive signing for the Premier League this summer was Jack Grealish, closely followed by Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea. Arsenal spent the most amount of money this summer, close to £150 million including Ben White and Martin Odegaard as the key acquisitions.

Italy – £473.8m

The next highest financial expenditure in Europe is from Serie A, with Roma leading the spending charts. The arrival of Jose Mourinho at the capital club has caused them to ramp up their spending by adding Tammy Abraham and Rui Patricio to their ranks.

Among other signings in Serie A are those of Fikayo Tomori and Mike Maignan for AC Milan.

France – £428.9m

The majority of France’s spending comes from PSG, with the arrivals of Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes. Marseille were also quite active this summer with several new players joining the club, alongside Lyon who signed Xherdan Shaqiri and Jerome Boateng as the star recruits.

Germany – £337.9m

Sabitzer: "I haven't stopped smiling yet because I'm very happy to be here. Although everything happened last minute and was very stressful, I enjoyed every moment. You don't forget the day you sign for Bayern Munich. I'm very grateful that I could experience all this" pic.twitter.com/gKM6SAj7d9

Bayern Munich led the spending once again in the Bundesliga, with the arrival of Marcel Sabitzer and Dayot Upamecano. Borussia Dortmund come in second with Donyell Malen’s arrival while Leipzig also did decent business with the likes of Ilaix and Andre Silva joining them.

Spain – £325.4m

La Liga did the least business of the top five leagues this summer, but several notable deals took place. Eduardo Camavinga signed for Real Madrid, Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul joined Atletico Madrid while Barcelona managed to sign Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Luuk De Jong, Eric Garcia and Yusuf Demir this summer.
