Premier League clubs have broken their record for the most money spent in one transfer window, with £1.5 billion spent as on Thursday. With one week remaining in the window, the amount is only expected to rise.
The most expensive deal that has gone through so far is Liverpool’s £85.5million acquisition of Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Manchester City’s signing was worth only £51 million, while Marc Cucurella’s move to Chelsea was worth £62 million, making him the most expensive left-back in the history of the English top flight.
Premier League clubs break transfer record for one window
At this point in the transfer window last year, clubs had only spent £895 million. The amount increased by £200 million during the last week of the transfer market.
This summer, 135 players have been signed by Premier League clubs. This is much more than the number recruited in 2019 or 2020, and is closing on the 148 signed last summer.
The £60 million spent on Richarlison is also among the top amounts spent in the market this summer. Nottingham Forest are close to signing their 19th player of the summer, which will see them almost have a brand new squad following their promotion to the top flight.
Several top deals are still expected to take place in the final days, which will make the total spending even higher. However, this also shows the sheer financial domination that the English league has over the rest of Europe and the world.
