Prabhsimran Singh’s explosive 91 off 48 balls and Arshdeep Singh’s three early breakthroughs propelled Punjab Kings to a 37-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants, securing them the second spot in the IPL 2025 standings. After being asked to bat, PBKS posted a formidable 236/5, with a powerplay score of 66/2 at a run rate of 11.00, as Prabhsimran’s aggressive stroke play set the tone. In comparison, LSG could only manage 199/7 in their chase, with their powerplay score standing at 38/3 at a much slower run rate of 6.33, underlining the early damage caused by Arshdeep, who claimed the top three wickets.

Prabhsimran

The game was decided early in both innings. Although PBKS lost a couple of wickets in the first six overs, they maintained a strong run rate, finishing with 66/2 in the powerplay. Prabhsimran Singh, with 4 fours and 6 sixes, took charge, ensuring PBKS stayed on track for a big total. LSG, however, failed to break free early in their innings. Arshdeep Singh’s early strikes, which included the top three batsmen, left them at a precarious 38/3 in the powerplay. PBKS capitalized on their early momentum, continuing to attack and finish with 236/5. LSG, hindered by their poor start and the loss of early wickets, never fully recovered, despite some fight in the second half, and fell short in the chase.

PBKS Lose Two But Maintain Positive Momentum

Akash Singh, who replaced Ravi Bishnoi, found early movement and troubled Priyansh Arya, dismissing the opener in the first over. Josh Inglis, however, came out with positive intent, hitting a boundary off Akash and following it up with three consecutive sixes off Mayank Yadav. While Akash bowled a quiet second over, Mayank leaked runs, conceding two sixes and a four to Prabhsimran Singh.

Akash Singh

Inglis, having had a couple of lucky breaks, also hit a six off Akash but soon fell, pulling the ball to David Miller at deep midwicket, who took a solid overhead catch. PBKS nearly lost their third wicket in the powerplay when Nicholas Pooran dropped a high catch, denying Avesh Khan the wicket of Prabhsimran. The batter then struck a boundary, ensuring PBKS finished the powerplay on a positive note.

Prabhsimran and Shreyas Propel PBKS’ Progress

Prabhsimran kept finding the boundaries even as the field spread, while he and Shreyas Iyer rotated the strike effectively. The third-wicket pair quickly raised a half-century stand, pushing PBKS past the 100-run mark in the 10th over. Shreyas hit a four when Mayank returned to the attack, and a single from Prabhsimran in the same over brought up his fifty off just 30 balls. Shreyas then took on Prince Yadav, smashing a six and a four, and also cleared the fence off Digvesh Rathi.

However, Rathi struck back, dismissing Shreyas for 45 as he sliced one to point, marking his first dismissal to a spinner in this IPL. Nehal Wadhera kept the momentum going, including a pick-up six off Prince. Rathi’s third over turned out to be expensive, as Prabhsimran cleared the fence twice and Wadhera hit a four, setting PBKS up for a strong finish.

Sustained Onslaught Powers PBKS to a Big Total

Wadhera’s innings was cut short when Prince bowled him around his legs, but the onslaught continued unabated. Prabhsimran launched a six over deep midwicket off Prince, and Mayank conceded 15 runs in the next over, finishing with figures of 0-60. Shashank Singh joined the attack, hitting a four and sending a six deep to backward square leg. Avesh, struggling throughout the game, also leaked runs in the 18th over. Shashank hit two fours, while Prabhsimran cleared the fence twice and placed a four past the keeper, taking 26 runs off the over.

Shashank Singh

This brought up a 50-run partnership off just 16 balls and took PBKS to 212 with two overs still remaining. Shashank received a reprieve when Pant failed to hold on to a chance off Rathi, but the spinner eventually dismissed Prabhsimran as he attempted a switch-hit. Marcus Stoinis, returning to the playing squad, hit a four off Rathi, who finished with 2-46. A six from Stoinis and a four from Shashank off Avesh helped PBKS finish in style, posting their highest-ever total at this venue with 236 runs.

Arshdeep’s Early Strikes Derail LSG’s Chase

Arshdeep Singh set the tone with a miserly three-run opening over, immediately putting LSG on the back foot. Although Aiden Markram hit Marco Jansen for a four and a six in the next over, Arshdeep ensured PBKS maintained control. He returned to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, who flicked to deep backward square, and then sent Markram back by forcing him to chop onto his stumps — all while conceding just one run in the over.

Arshdeep Singh

Rishabh Pant managed to clear the ropes off Jansen, and Nicholas Pooran struck a boundary off Arshdeep, but the left-arm pacer hit back again. He trapped Pooran in front as the batter missed a slog sweep and took the review with him. Even though Ayush Badoni hit a six off Azmatullah Omarzai, Arshdeep’s triple strike left LSG reeling from a powerplay collapse.

Samad-Badoni Counterattack Not Enough to Catch PBKS

Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad launched a spirited counterattack, but PBKS remained comfortably ahead in the contest. Badoni started by scooping Azmatullah Omarzai for a four, while Rishabh Pant found a couple of boundaries off Yuzvendra Chahal to shift gears. However, LSG’s situation worsened when Pant lost both his bat and his wicket in the same over while attempting a lofted shot. Soon after, David Miller mistimed a cut off Omarzai and departed, leaving LSG tottering at 73/5 by the 10th over.

Abdul Samad

Despite the setback, Samad and Badoni counterpunched with flair. Samad launched Vyshak Vijaykumar for a six, and Badoni followed up with a maximum and two fours in a 21-run 12th over. Samad continued the charge, hammering two sixes off Chahal in an over that went for 16. Badoni reached his half-century off just 22 balls by scooping Vyshak for four, but with the asking rate crossing 18 by the end of the 14th over and climbing to nearly 19 despite a four and six from Samad off Marcus Stoinis, the target remained out of reach. Samad even got a reprieve when Nehal Wadhera slipped at deep midwicket, but the mountain was already too steep to climb.

PBKS Seal Victory Despite Badoni’s Valiant Half-Century

Arshdeep Singh tightened the screws in the 16th over, conceding just six runs to push the required rate to 22 per over. Marco Jansen then broke the 81-run sixth-wicket stand — built in just 41 balls — by dismissing Abdul Samad for a well-made 45 off 24, as the batter chipped a return catch to the bowler. With 79 needed off the final three overs, Ayush Badoni brought up his fifty in 32 balls by launching Vyshak Vijaykumar for a six, following it up with another maximum and a boundary.

Ayush Badoni

Despite his heroics, the equation remained steep — 61 required off the final two overs and then 49 in the last. Badoni’s brave effort ended in the final over when he fell to Yuzvendra Chahal for 55. Avesh Khan added a six and a four to help LSG finish at 199, but PBKS held firm to register a 37-run win.
