After an intense, physical 90 minutes in Budapest, Portugal came away with the victory against Hungary in their first match in Euro 2020. The visitors won 3-0 on the day, as all three goals came within the last 10 minutes of regulation time.

Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected effort off of Willi Orban opened the scoring, and Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty given away by Orban a short while after to double their lead. The Portuguese further cemented his status as the highest goalscorer in Euros as he beat Peter Gulacsi from close range to make it 3-0.

Szabolcs Schon managed to put the ball past Rui Patricio before Portugal started scoring, but the linesman put up his flag to rule the goal out for offside as soon as the ball hit the back of the net.

Portugal dominated in possession throughout the game, and Hungary had to show immense defensive solidarity throughout the game. But, as time went on and legs became tired, the Hungarians conceded thrice despite their strong showing for the majority of the game.

Peter Gulacsi made numerous important saves throughout the first half to keep his team in the game and fend off the relentless Portuguese attack, but it was all in vain in the end. However, missed chances from the opposition’s forwards made sure that they did not concede any moe

Hungary grew into the game in the second half, and had a number of chances to score themselves. But, they were unlucky on the day and although Hungary didn’t deserve to lose 3-0, Portugal got the job done late.
