'Point Break' TV Series Greenlit at AMC With 8-Episodes

AMC Global Media has officially greenlit a TV series based on Point Break, the cult 1991 action film, for AMC and its streaming platform AMC+. The announcement was made on 11 September 2026, confirming a project that had first been reported to be in development back in December 2025.

What the Series Is About

Set more than three decades after the events of the original film, the new series follows a fresh heist crew inspired by, and connected to, the notorious Ex-Presidents gang. According to the official logline, the FBI is forced to rely on a mysterious former professional surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate the group.

The series will air on AMC and stream on AMC+ within the U.S. and Canada. Internationally, it has been commissioned by Canal+ for its footprint spanning more than 50 countries across France, Europe, Africa, and Asia, with StudioCanal handling international sales and worldwide distribution outside North America.

Who’s Behind the Show

Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of the company that also produced the 2015 Point Break film remake and owns rights to the franchise, is serving as lead studio. Dave Kalstein, known for his work on Treadstone, Quantico, and NCIS: Los Angeles, and Christopher C. Rogers, known for Halt and Catch Fire and Sugar, are attached as co-showrunners and executive producers.

Additional executive producers include Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, along with Alcon Television Group’s head of television Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen. On the StudioCanal side, M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert, and Daniel Gratton are overseeing the project, while Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as supervising producers.

AMC Global Media’s chief content officer and AMC Studios president Dan McDermott said the project combines an unforgettable original film with a strong creative team and clear fan interest, calling the greenlight one the network is thrilled about. He added that Kalstein and Rogers have built a story that honors the original film while introducing a new generation of Ex-Presidents.

Kalstein and Rogers themselves described the original Point Break as the movie that “rocked our worlds forever,” reflecting on how its themes of friendship and outlaw spirit resonated widely with audiences over the years.

The Original Film’s Legacy

The original Point Break, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, the surfer and leader of the Ex-Presidents gang, alongside Lori Petty and Gary Busey. Released in 1991, the film has since become a cult classic, inspiring a 2015 theatrical remake and now this television continuation more than three decades later.

News of the series being in development first emerged in December 2025, with AMC publicly confirming it was in the works in late April 2026, alongside a separate NASCAR-themed series starring Dennis Quaid also being developed at the network. With the greenlight now official, production on the eight-episode first season is set to begin in early 2027.
