Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to join Marseille after spending a solitary season with Chelsea. The Gabon striker had a disappointing year in West London, after signing from Barcelona last summer.
The plan was for him to feature under Thomas Tuchel, but the German was sacked shortly into the new season. And since then, he has been frozen out of the squad first by Graham Potter, and then by Frank Lampard. Now, he is set to move on and return to Ligue 1 to see out the next chapter in his career.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign for Marseille in the coming days
Chelsea are demanding around £5 million from Marseille to let the player leave this summer. He has agreed a contract until 2026 with the French side, and is open to the move, which is why they are optimistic of getting it done.
The 34-year-old had interest from Saudi Arabia for a move as well. However, he turned their approaches down in favour of a stay in European football.
In the past, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played for Saint Etienne in France before going on to play for Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal. He spent one season with Barcelona before returning to the Premier League with Chelsea. But, he flopped massively and has now been cut out of the project completely.
Chelsea’s massive slew of departures is expected to continue with more players on the chopping board after Aubameyang.
