The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced a feature called UPI Circle in the UPI ecosystem about eight months ago. This is if a primary UPI user chooses to have a family member or a friend as a secondary user who can now use the primary user’s bank account to initiate payments.

Although this feature was announced by Google Pay earlier, it is not yet widely available. But a competitor, PhonePe, has said in a blog post that it has started to make this feature available to its customers. Here’s a complete guide on using the UPI Circle feature on PhonePe.

How to Activate the UPI Circle Feature on PhonePe:

Activating the UPI Circle feature on PhonePe is a simple process, requiring only a few steps. Follow these instructions to set it up:

  • Open the PhonePe app and go to the home screen.
  • Find the UPI Circle icon under the “Manage Payments” tab.
  • Tap on “Invite Secondary Contact” to create the UPI Circle and link secondary users. You can either scan their QR codes or manually enter their UPI ID.
  • Once the invitation is sent, secondary users can accept the request to join the UPI Circle.
  • Secondary users can then select the primary user’s account as their primary mode of payment.

UPI Circle Feature Overview:

A primary UPI user in the UPI Circle can enable their family members or friends to make payments from their bank account. The primary user has control over how much authorization to assign to a secondary user. These modes include Full Delegation, where secondary users can pay completely by themselves, and Partial Delegation, which requires primary user permission for each transaction.

The primary users can also have a maximum payment limit of ₹15,000 and ₹5,000 per transaction. They can also vary monthly limits for individual secondary users. They can also monitor the transactions and revoke access at any time if required. A primary user can add up to five secondary users to their UPI Circle, but each secondary user can only be linked to one primary user. The primary user will also receive notifications when a payment is made by a secondary user, even with full delegation enabled for that user.
