Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has been heavily rumoured as the next manager of Tottenham Hotspur. And now, according to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese tactician could indeed be the official replacement for compatriot Jose Mourinho.

The 48-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract with Tottenham and could do so by this Wednesday. He has been recommended by Spurs’ new sporting director, Fabio Paratici. The former Juventus sporting director was the best at his job in Italy and was one of the reasons behind the Turin based club’s success over the last decade.

Tottenham have been looking for a coach who plays possession-based football, much like the Premier League’s Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp, who have traded the title between them in the last few seasons and have been in a league of their own in previous years. Fonseca’s work with Shakhtar Donetsk shows that he has what it takes to fit the bill, and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has also given the transfer the green light, according to Romano.

The only criticism of Foncesca’s style of play is that his teams are often left wide open defensively. And considering Tottenham’s situation, that is a big problem. To cope with that, Spurs are allowing Fonseca to change the backroom staff completely to meet his needs.

Spurs are also willing to bring in a centre-back this summer, with the sale of Juan Foyth leaving them a man down. Joachim Andersen has been linked as one of the names, but there are other targets on Spurs’ list as well.
