A Storied Career with Mixed Managerial Success

Patrick Kluivert, 48, is celebrated for his illustrious playing career with top clubs like Ajax, Barcelona, and Newcastle, and his remarkable record of 40 goals in 79 appearances for the Netherlands. Despite his brilliance on the field, Kluivert has faced challenges replicating this success as a manager.

After retiring in 2008, Kluivert ventured into coaching, starting as an assistant at AZ Alkmaar. His early coaching journey included stints as No. 2 at Brisbane Roar under Ange Postecoglou and with NEC in the Netherlands. He also served as assistant coach for the Dutch national team. However, his tenure as head coach of Adana Demirspor in Turkey was cut short after only five months, highlighting his inconsistent managerial track record.

Shin Tae-Yong’s Departure: A Controversial Decision

The appointment of Kluivert follows the unexpected removal of Shin Tae-Yong, a popular figure among fans and players. Erick Thohir, Indonesian football director and former Inter Milan owner, announced the decision, emphasizing the need for stronger leadership and better communication.

“We see the need for a leader who is better able to implement the strategies agreed upon by the players, and who has better communication,” Thohir explained. “Correspondence regarding the end of our relationship has been received [by Shin], and I would like to express my gratitude. We have also found a replacement, who will arrive on the 11th [of January]. A news conference will be held on the 12th.”

A Fresh Start for Indonesia

Kluivert has signed a two-year contract with an option to extend for another two years. His primary mission will be to guide Indonesia through the 2026 World Cup qualification process. This marks a significant challenge for the nation, currently ranked 127th in FIFA’s rankings.

Indonesia has never participated in the World Cup but remains in contention after a promising start to the qualifiers. In the third round of Asian qualifications, they rank third in Group C, ahead of heavyweights like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China, trailing only Japan and Australia.

A Risky Gamble on an Unproven Coach

Kluivert’s appointment has raised eyebrows due to his limited success as a manager. While his reputation as a player is unquestionable, his inexperience in high-pressure international coaching scenarios is a concern. Many question whether he can achieve what Shin Tae-Yong had been steadily building—a competitive team with a clear identity.

A Family Affair in Football

Interestingly, Kluivert’s son, Justin Kluivert, is also making waves in football.

The 25-year-old plays for Bournemouth and the Dutch national team, carrying forward the family’s footballing legacy.

Aiming for History

For Kluivert, this role represents an opportunity to reinvent himself as a manager and make a lasting impact on a team eager for its moment on the global stage. For Indonesia, it’s a bold move aimed at achieving the unthinkable—qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.

Patrick Kluivert’s appointment signals a new era for Indonesian football. While the decision comes with risks, it also brings hope of fresh strategies and renewed energy. As the journey toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup unfolds, all eyes will be on Kluivert to see if he can turn this ambitious dream into reality.
