Paris Saint-Germain reclaimed the Ligue 1 title from Lille after their 1-1 draw against Lens. Lionel Messi scored his fourth league goal of the season shortly after the hour mark, but substitute Corentin Jean cancelled out the Argentinian’s effort in the 88th minute, only six minutes after being substituted on.
The draw was enough for the Parisians to mathematically secure the title, with four games yet to go in the season. As a result, the Qatari-owned club secured their tenth league title to get back to dominating the domestic league.
Paris Saint-Germain return to the top of Ligue 1
The capital club have now matched Saint-Etienne for the most Ligue 1 titles of all-time with 10 each. Given their current squad depth and advantage over the rest of the league, they might hold that record on their own by the end of the coming season.
Interestingly, some of the Paris Saint-Germain ultras walked out of the stadium when the team were celebrating their title win. They also booed the players at half time, after failing to score against Lens. This perfectly captures the attitude towards the league title for PSG fans, and their evaluation of the ongoing season.
Having been eliminated from the Champions League and Coupe de France, there is nothing more for the team to play for realistically. As a result, they can now turn their attention to matters surrounding the futures of star players like Kylian Mbappe this summer.
